Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, established in 1917, is a full-service commercial bank that caters to the retail and commercial needs of individuals, small and medium sized companies, and major corporations.

The Union Bank of Nigeria has a long and proud history dating back to 1917, when it first opened its doors for business as the Colonial Bank. In 1925 it was bought by Barclays, becoming Barclays Bank Dominion, Colonial and Overseas which it remained until the early 1970s.

In 1971, Barclays incorporated the bank locally in Nigeria as Barclays Bank of Nigeria plc and sold a significant shareholding to the Federal Government and the Nigerian public. In 1979 the banks name was changed to the Union Bank of Nigeria plc, to reflect the change in its ownership structure.

In the early 1990s the Nigerian Government started a policy of privatisation of state owned assets, which resulted in 1993 in both the Government and Barclays selling their remaining stakes in the bank to the public at large, thus creating a truly publically owned bank.

1. Imagine that as a Women Techmakers scholar, you are given the opportunity to give a 5 minute speech to a group of high school students to encourage them to pursue a degree in Computer Science. Remember, the students want to know what is exciting and interesting about the field. Please prepare a speech to give to the students. (300-500 words)

When writing your essay, please remember that the CS professional reviewing your application may not share the same technical expertise or knowledge of your particular research field. Please make sure to explain all technical terms and processes accordingly. Your essay should include the following sections: The problem your project or research is trying to solve, the solution that was chosen, the technical challenges you faced, your contribution to the success of the project and why you consider this project successful or innovative or both. ● What was the biggest factor for you in deciding to study Computer Science?

● Based on your experience/observation at your university, what percentage of women study Computer Science?

● What is your university doing to encourage women to select technical degrees?

● What cultural factors in your country influence fewer women to select technical degrees?

● If you were the Head of the Computer Science department at your university, what initiatives would you start to reverse the trend and increase the involvement of women in Computer Science?
Each application will be evaluated and scored based on the following criteria:

(i) demonstration of passion to computer science; (ii) academic merit; (iii) demonstration of leadership skills (the “Criteria”). Each application that meets the Criteria will be reviewed by Google in accordance with the Criteria by an internal panel of Google judges and the best 20 applications (as assessed by the panel of judges in their sole discretion against the Criteria) will be successful.
