RTDNA Journalism scholarships for Students and Professionals (US)

Since 1970, RTDNF has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships and fellowships to more than 500 young journalists as part of its mission as the educational arm of RTDNA.

The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) offers four fellowships and seven scholarships for undergraduate and graduate journalism students. The awards range from US$1,000 to US$10,000 and seek to reward students and young professionals who plan to pursue careers in digital and broadcast journalism.
Recipients have gone on enjoy careers from reporter, anchor, and news director to White House speechwriter, media regulatory attorney, and journalism educator. Several have served as RTDNA board members and many are Murrow Award winners.

Fellowships are open to professional broadcast or digital journalists with fewer than 10 years of experience. Scholarships are open to college students pursuing careers in radio, television, or digital journalism. Winners must be officially enrolled, full-time sophomores. juniors or seniors in good standing. Scholarship and fellowship winners are also invited to attend the Excellence in Journalism conference.

The application window runs from October 2017 through January 2018. Scholarships will be awarded in May for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Benefits:

  • Journalism students and young journalists can apply for up to US$10,000 in grants.
  • In addition to cash awards, winners are invited to attend the Excellence in Journalism conference.

Eligibility:

  • just pursuing a career in electronic journalism or broadcast media 
  • if you are a non-citizen, you must have a US Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)
  • Undergraduate applicants must be currently enrolled in a university program with one year remaining before they graduate.

Complete the online application form, including:

  • Contact information
  • Experience URL links to 3-5 work samples Work samples should be broadcast (television/radio) or online news pieces
  • Work samples should be uploaded to a host site like YouTube, Vimeo, SoundCloud, etc.

  1. Discuss your current and past journalism experience
  2. Describe how you intend to use the funds
  3. Discuss your choice to pursue a career in journalism
