2018 African Writing Caine Prize

Deadline: 31st January 2018.

We are happy to take submissions from internet magazines, but must insist that we receive six hard copies of these, as of other submissions.

Also it is important that internet entries be carefully edited: past judges have not viewed favourably entries containing typos and other errors.
Works translated into English from other languages are not excluded, provided they have been published in translation, and should such a work win, a proportion of the prize would be awarded to the translator.

The deadline for the next prize is 31 January 2018 and the award is made in July each year. Works received after the 31st January will be put forward to the next year’s prize. The short-list is selected from work originally published in the five years preceding the submissions deadline and not previously considered for a Caine Prize. In general it is unwise to delay the submission of entries until shortly before the deadline: postal and delivery hiccups can easily result in material arriving too late.

Eligibility

  • Unpublished work is not eligible for the Caine Prize.
  • Submissions should be made by publishers only.
  • Only fictional work is eligible.
  • Only one story per author will be considered in any one year.
  • Submissions should specify which African country the author comes from and the word count.
  • We require 6 copies of the work in its originally published version.
  • If the work is published in a book or journal, we would like to receive at least one copy of the book / journal and five photocopies; but particularly where several stories are submitted from one anthology we would like if possible to receive six copies of the book / journal itself.
  • If the work is published online, we would like to receive six photocopies.
  • Indicative length is between 3000 and 10,000 words and only short stories are eligible.

How do I apply?

  • There is no application form. To apply please send six original published copies of the work for consideration to the Caine Prize office including a letter from the publisher.
  • If the work is published in a book or journal, we would like to receive at least one copy of the book / journal and five photocopies; but particularly where several stories are submitted from one anthology we would like if possible to receive six copies of the book / journal itself.
  • If published in a magazine or journal we will accept one original copy plus five photocopies, but would prefer six original copies.
  • If the work is published online, we would like to receive six printed copies.

Benefits

Winning and short-listed authors will be invited to participate in writers’ workshops in Africa, London and elsewhere as resources permit. There is a cash prize of £10,000 for the winning author and a travel award for each of the short-listed candidates (up to five in all). The shortlisted candidates will also receive a Prize of £500. The winner is also invited to go to three literature festivals in Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria.

Note

Please note that works which do not conform to the criteria will not be considered for the prize. Please do not waste your own time and postage by sending in material which is unsuitable. If you are not sure whether your work is eligible, please email us for advice on [email protected]

ICFJ Reporting Fellowship on Migration and Climate for Nigerian Journalists

ICFJ Reporting Fellowship on Migration and Climate for Nigerian Journalists

Deadline: September 21, 2017

Nigerian journalists are invited to apply for a reporting fellowship aimed at improved coverage of migration due to conflict or instability and the resulting impact on climate and economic prospects.

The program focuses on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 10 and 13, which aim to “reduce inequality within and among countries” and “take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts” by 2030.

The ICFJ-United Nations Foundation Reporting Fellowship will give up to 40 journalists access to global experts and policymakers who focus on issues related to migration and climate. The Fellowship offers virtual workshops, an on-the-ground study tour in Nigeria and reporting grants to cover climate and migration issues.

Ahead of COP 23, the fellows will participate in virtual briefings and roundtable discussions with U.N. experts and journalism trainers. During this online course, October 10-13, participants will learn about new data and storytelling strategies to help them cover these critically important issues. After the course, the fellows will produce one to two in-depth, contextual stories related to the sustainable development goals.

Based on the stories produced through the course, 15-20 journalists will be chosen to attend further hands-on training sessions in Lagos. The trainings will be led by local and international experts on climate and migration. ICFJ will cover all transportation costs, hotel and meal expenses for the fellows.

The program is divided into three parts:

  • An online workshop on covering SDGs, with a focus on climate and migration. Following the workshop, participants will have three weeks to produce stories for publication or broadcast in their media outlets, based on the training and mentoring received in the online workshop.

  • A three-day workshop in Nigeria in late November led by award-winning science and environmental journalists. Up to 20 participants from the online course will work with experts on climate and migration, data journalism and visualizations.

  • At the end of the study tour, participants will receive small reporting grants to produce in-depth stories on SDGs, climate and migration. The top three stories from this group will receive grants of up to $1,000 to continue their coverage.

Interested Nigerian journalists are invited to apply now . The application will close on September 21, 2017.
