WHAT IS THE JOURNALISM PROGRAMME?

The Reuters Journalism Programme is an opportunity for recent graduates, early career reporters, or professionals with proven experience who are looking to switch careers into journalism. The programme in 2018 will consist of 6 months of formal and on-the-job journalism training, initially in our London newsroom , followed by one of our other main reporting newsrooms or bureaus in the Middle East or Africa.

The programme provides one semester scholarships to outstanding undergraduate students from around the world for non-degree full-time study combined with community service, professional development, and cultural enrichment.

Program goal is to promote mutual understanding between people of the United States and other countries.

The Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). This international educational and cultural exchange program brings future leaders to the United States to experience the U.S. educational system, enhance their knowledge, and explore U.S. culture and values. Students need to demonstrate that they have a good level of written and spoken English.

The Alfa Fellowship Program is a distinguished international initiative that each year offers up to 18 accomplished young Americans, Britons, and Germans the opportunity to complete a high-level professional development program in Russia.

Over the course of the program, Alfa Fellows complete work placements at leading institutions, attend professional seminars, and receive intensive language training. The fellowship provides a monthly stipend, accommodation, insurance, all program-related travel costs, language training in Russia, and private tutoring in the United States, United Kingdom, or Germany.

The key goals of the Alfa Fellowship Program are to expand networks of American, British, German, and Russian professionals, develop greater intercultural understanding, and advance U.S.-Russian, U.K.-Russian, and German-Russian relations.

The Alfa Fellowship Program is sponsored by Alfa-Bank and administered by Cultural Vistas in the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany; and by the Fund for International Fellowships and Cultural Dialogue in Russia.

Alfa Fellows have a demonstrated interest in Russian and European/Eurasian affairs, exceptional academic and professional credentials, proven personal initiative, and clear goals and expectations for their professional assignments. Fellows tend to be between the ages of 25 and 35 with graduate degrees and professional experience in business, economics, journalism, law, public policy or a related field. Fellows possess leadership potential and are active in community or public service. While Russian language skills vary, most Fellows have studied Russian for at least two years at the post-secondary level.

  • Active involvement in community or public service
  • Russian language experience is preferred, however not required, at the time of application. If an applicant does not speak Russian, he or she will need to demonstrate proficiency in a second language to qualify for the program
  • Evidence of leadership potential

    Each successful applicant will receive academic support and a small bursary to produce a high quality synthesis paper and a policy brief relating to the broad theme of Youth Employment and Private Sector Growth in Africa . Under this theme, research contributions will critically explore a selection from the following themes:

    • Digital technologies
    • Family and gender relations
    • Infrastructure, energy and engineering sectors growth

    • Migration and/or stretched livelihoods

    The Matasa Fellows Network is open to African nationals – they need to fulfil the following criteria:

    • Completed a PhD within last two years or are in the final stages of completing a PhD

    The Union for International Cancer Control has announced the availability of twenty African Cancer Fellowships for cancer professionals. These 20 fellowships are available to visit an organisation in another country with a strong emphasis on learning skills that will be shared with peers in their home organisation or network.

    The programme aims to enhance educational opportunities for healthcare workers in Africa, thereby expanding workforce capability and improving care for cancer patients.

    The Union for International Cancer Control has provided grants to more than 6,000 cancer professionals and institutions in support of cancer control, prevention and early detection, research, education, advocacy and community outreach.

    Enabling health care workers to improve cancer outcomes in Africa. UICC, supported by the American Cancer Society, has launched a new programme of fellowships for cancer professionals in Africa, linked to the 2018 World Cancer Congress. The goal of this initiative is to enable health care workers to improve cancer outcomes in Africa.

    Objectives:

    The programme aims to enhance educational opportunities for health care workers in Africa, thereby expanding workforce capability and improving care for cancer patients. Hands-on fellowship opportunities are combined with peer-to-peer exchange and information sharing that will allow individuals to learn important skills relevant to cancer care and to disseminate them throughout their region.

    To achieve these goals UICC is offering 20 fellowships to visit an organisation in another country with a strong emphasis on learning skills that will be shared with peers in their home organisation or network.

     Benefits/Awards:

    The awards are based on candidates’ estimates for travel and living costs, published fares and UICC scales but are only a contribution towards least expensive regional/international travel and living costs.
    Eligibility:

    The programme is open to individuals working in any area across the cancer continuum who wish to develop their knowledge and innovate in a particular topic

    • Medical professionals must hold relevant  qualification e.g. MD, MBBS, Registered Nurse, Diploma of midwifery.
    • Non-medical applicants, such as tho working in cancer societies or non-governmental organisations (NGOs), should hold a Bachelor’s degree.
    • Candidates should have documented experience of working on cancer or cancer patients
    • Medical and PhD students are not eligible to apply

    African applicants are eligible for these fellowships.
    Depending on the projects, pairs of applicants from the same institution are also welcome to apply to visit the same host institution where this will contribute to successful implementation on return home.

    The aim of the Heinz-Kühn-Foundation is to support the training and professional development of junior journalists.

    The foundation awards scholarships to young journalists from North-Rhine-Westphalia for six-week or three-month reporting trips in developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America .

    The foundation also provides funds to enable candidates from developing countries to gain professional journalism experience in North-Rhine-Westphalia for up to three months .

    Heinz-Kühn-Foundation scholarships are intended to enable junior journalists to further their professional development and continue training in new surroundings, and to gain a first-hand and in-depth knowledge of the customs, opinions and way of life in other countries .

    Eligibility:

    Young journalists from North-Rhine-Westphalia and developing countries are eligible for a scholarship if they satisfy the following requirements:

    • have a keen interest in development issues;
    • have already gained substantial professional experience in journalism (a completed college education is desirable);
    • are not older than 35 years of age; and,
    • have a good command of the official language of their host country ( candidates from abroad must at least have a basic knowledge of the German language ).

    Scholarship holders get

    • a lump-sum contribution towards living expenses in the host country (with scholarship payments covering training and living expenses in the host country);
    • a lump-sum allowance for flight and travelling expenses (the foundation pays a return air ticket for candidates from abroad);
    • an allowance to cover costs of research materials (e.g. literature);
    • an allowance for trips within the host country; and,
    • (if neccessary, for scholarship holders from abroad) a German language course of up to four months at the Düsseldorf or Bonn based Goethe-Institut.
    • In the lead up to the scholarship and throughout the duration of the scholarship, the Heinz-Kühn-Foundation will provide support.

    What are the obligations of German scholarship holders?

    Scholarship holders from North-Rhine-Westphalia have to determine and agree with the foundation a plan for their training and professional development in their host country and to follow this plan during the scholarship to the best of their ability. 

    They also undertake to submit a detailed report of their stay in the host country within six weeks of completing the scholarship. All reports from scholarship holders are published in the yearbook of the Heinz-Kühn-Foundation.

    How to apply

    Journalists who meet the requirements for a scholarship should first contact the foundation to discuss possible host countries and their topics of interest.

    Applications for the following year must be received by 30 November.

    The following documents should be enclosed with the application:

    • curriculum vitae in tabular form and a photograph;
    • certificates of vocational training and present occupation;
    • foreign languages certificates;
    • German candidates should provide a detailed statement explaining their reasons for applying, their choice of host country and proposed topic of research.
    •  Candidates from abroad should provide a letter of motivation in German.

    Who selects successful candidates?

    Candidates from North-Rhine-Westphalia who are eligible and have been short-listed for a scholarship will be invited to an interview with a selection committee headed by a member of the managing board of the Heinz-Kühn-Foundation.

    Decisions are taken by the board of trustees of the Heinz-Kühn-Foundation on the recommendation of the selection committee.
