The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) brings together representatives of the 193 Member States of the UN, major groups and stakeholders to agree on policies to address the worlds most pressing environmental challenges. The next session UNEA-5.2 takes place in hybrid format in Nairobi from 28 February – 2 March 2022, with the overall theme of “Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”.

With support from the Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM), government of Sweden and the UNEP Secretariat, we are pleased to announce that upto 40 funded spots for participation are available for young people toward the above mentioned events, starting from 18th February 2022 to 5th March 2022.

The funded opportunity is intended to bring children and youth from all regions of the world to Nairobi, with aim to a) build capacity among children and youth when it comes to their understanding of United Nations processes and environmental governance b) enable networking between youth advocates globally and c) enable policy advocacy of children and youth in the relevant negotiations towards more environmental protection and meaningful youth engagement.

Benefits:

  • Costs of to and from international air travel.
  • Costs of visa and travel insurance.
  • Costs of any necessary COVID-19 tests (including PCR testing required for travel, and daily testing).
  • Cost of food and subsistence allowance.
  • Costs for accommodation in twin-rooms (gender-specific).

Eligibility:

  • The applicant must be under the age of 35at the time of application

If selected,

  • And above the age of 18, the applicant must beavailable to travel and stay from 18th February – 5th March 2022 And is below the age of 18, the applicant + one chaperone of the applicant must be available to travel and stay from 18th February – 5th March 2022.
  • Be fully vaccinated through WHO-approved vaccines until 30th January 2022, as per the requirements for access to the UN compound in Kenya and entry to Kenya.

This means:

  • both doses of vaccines administered before 30th January 2022 for Pfizer / Moderna / Sinopharm / Sinovac / AstraZeneca / Covishield / Novavax / Covaxin
  • OR one dose of vaccine administered before 30th January 2022 for Janssen (Johnson &Johnson)
