Take your journalism skills to the next level and deepen your understanding of environmental issues by applying for the 2019-2020 Ted Scripps Fellowships in Environmental Journalism. Five accepted candidates will audit courses, participate in weekly seminars and field trips, and work on a significant project. These positions are offered by the Center for Environmental Journalism, part of the College of Media, Communication and Information at the University of Colorado Boulder.

The program provides a $71,000 stipend. It also covers tuition and fees, a regional bus pass, and attendance at the annual SEJ conference. Employment begins at the start of the Fall 2019 semester and runs for nine months through the end of the Spring 2020 semester. All university breaks and holidays will be observed.

The fellowship is open to full-time journalists working in any medium who are interested in deepening and broadening their knowledge of environmental issues. It is aimed at outstanding journalists committed to a career in professional journalism.

Benefits/Funding:

  • Fellows will receive a total of $71,000 for the nine-month academic year, and will receive a deposit at the end of each month.
  • The fellowship covers tuition fees.

It also provides a desktop computer at each fellow’s desk. Employers are strongly encouraged to continue benefits, including health insurance. Health insurance is not covered by the fellowship program.

Eligibility:

  • Five Ted Scripps Fellowships are awarded each year. The fellowship is open to full-time journalists working in any medium who are interested in deepening and broadening their knowledge of environmental issues. It is aimed at outstanding journalists committed to a career in professional journalism.

  • Applicants must have a minimum of five years full-time professional journalism experience and must also have at least a BA or BS college degree. Applicants may include reporters, editors, producers, photojournalists, documentarians, and feature writers. Both salaried staff and full-time freelancers are welcome to apply. Prior experience in covering the environment is not required.
  • They are pleased to receive applications from international applicants; however, please be advised that you must be authorized to work in the United States to be eligible for this position.

A selection committee will review all applications, select ten candidates to be interviewed by phone, and recommend five candidates for the fellowship. Applicants will be notified of selection around May 1.
