Deutsche Welle (DW) International Journalism Traineeship Program 2019

Deutsche Welle (DW) International Journalism Traineeship Program 2019

Deadline: January 11, 2019

We are looking for young people from all over the world interested in a comprehensive, exceptional quality journalism program with an international broadcaster. Candidates should have journalism experience or be passionate about switching to journalism from technology/IT, economics or the sciences. We are looking for open-minded people full of creative ideas. The program covers the range of skills a journalist of the future needs: TV moderation, multimedia storytelling, data journalism, social media and virtual reality – in seminars, workshops and of course the DW editorial offices and our correspondent bureaux in Washington, Moscow and Brussels. DW trainees are involved in long-term innovative, international projects and have been honored in past years with the CNN Journalism Award and the Grimme Prize. After the traineeship, the trainees usually continue to work for DW.

Deutsche Welle’s newly-designed traineeship takes you around the world in just 18 months. Internships with our English and German editorial departments give you a chance to look into economic and cultural issues as well as news and sports. You’ll also be active in at least one of DW’s other broadcast language departments such as the Chinese, Farsi or Spanish department, and support them according to your language skills. Regardless of the language you’re working in you’ll be part of the editorial teams right from day one, writing and producing reports and conducting interviews for television, radio and online. At the core of the training is a total of six months of theory and practice-oriented seminar blocks looking at everything from journalism basics and live reports to data-driven journalism and mobile reporting. Multimedia is not just a buzzword here – it’s how we work. And it’ll be the way you work, too – in seminars, editorial departments and your final project. By the end of the traineeship you’ll be an expert in multimedia storytelling.

Our traineeship is one of the most prestigious journalism training programs in Europe, giving you the chance to learn all the skills you need to work successfully as a multimedia reporter and editor. The DW traineeship is all about gaining hands-on experience in radio, TV and online with a combination of intensive practical training blocks and newsroom placements both within DW and internationally. In this, trainees benefit from DW’s strong ties to other German public broadcasters and international media houses. Trainees are also able to explore the journalism trends of the future – from digital storytelling to data journalism and virtual reality. In addition, you will have the chance to develop a larger piece of innovative content through involvement in the scheme’s journalism projects.

We are looking for creative minds who reflect DW’s cultural and linguistic diversity and who have something to say.

Application requirements:

  • native speaker of one of DW’s languages, and excellent English and German skills
  • completed university degree, college degree or apprenticeship (we are especially looking for those with a background in technology/IT, science, politics or economics)
  • basic journalism experience
  • content published or broadcast
  • creative mind
  • excellent judge of journalism content
  • social media experience
  • ability to work in a fast-paced environment, both within teams and individually
  • strong MS Office skills, basic audio and video production skills, data skills.

The DW Traineeship offers:

  • the acquisition of a broad base of journalism skills
  • technology training across TV, radio and online
  • focused seminars delivered by experienced trainers
  • placements with various DW editorial departments in Bonn and Berlin as well as in one of our foreign bureaus in Brussels, Washington or Moscow
  • placement with partner broadcasters in Germany, Europe or worldwide
  • the chance to produce a larger journalism piece based on your own idea
  • a salary paid throughout the traineeship
  • the prospect of a DW employment contract upon successful completion of the traineeship.

what will they actually learn?
They are expected to acquire professional skills, like how to ask questions, do research, fact check and write news. Of course they also learn how to use equipment. But we always try out new things. We are always looking for new narrative forms and new developments in social media, mobile reporting, data journalism and virtual reality. Everyone is welcome to incorporate what they have already learned or seen elsewhere. Every year, we work with different combinations of instructors, so DW really has a lot to offer. What really matters is avoiding intellectual stagnation. We foster continuing development in journalism and always try out new things while challenging the old. That is what we expect of our applicants.

Traineeship Salary:

During the initial six months of the traineeship you earn a pre-tax monthly salary of 1.590 euros. That increases to 1.790 euros for the following six months, and to 1.855 euros for the final six months. Deutsche Welle’s traineeship is a full-time program. In exceptional cases, temporary employment outside of the program may be approved.

Note:

  • Applications for the DW International Traineeship starting in September 2019
  • Applications from women are explicitly welcome. Severely disabled applicants with equal qualification will be given particular consideration.
