The McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism

The McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism

Deadlines: December 15, 2017 and June 30, 2018.

The Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Center for Business Journalism, an initiative of the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism, began offering Fellowships to accomplished business journalists in the summer of 2014. Nearly two dozen veteran journalists have since been awarded grants of up to $15,000.

Applications will generally be accepted twice a year — in the summer and late fall.

The aim of the McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism is to support in-depth, ambitious coverage of critical issues related to the global economy and business. In an age when many news organizations no longer have the resources to tackle complex, time-consuming stories, the Fellowships enable experienced journalists to do the deep reporting needed to produce a serious piece of investigative or enterprise journalism.
Benefits and About the Fellowship

The McGraw Fellowship provides editorial and financial support to journalists who need the time and resources to produce a significant story or series that provides fresh insight into an important business or economic topic.

We accept applications for in-depth text, video or audio pieces, and we encourage proposals that take advantage of more than one storytelling form to create a multimedia package.

Typically, we’ll award grants up to $5,000 a month for one to three months; in exceptional cases, we’ll consider longer grants based upon specific proposals.

We’ll look for applicants with a proven ability to report and execute a complex project in their proposed medium; ideally, candidates will also have a strong background or reporting expertise on the subject of their piece.

The McGraw Center provides editorial supervision during the Fellowship. We work with the Fellows to develop their projects during the reporting phase and frequently edit the completed stories. We also assist with placing the articles. In some cases, we partner with established print, radio or digital outlets; in others we will publish them as e-books or through the CUNY J-School’s book imprint. The stories also run on the McGraw Center website.
Eligibility

  • The McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism is open to anyone with at least five years professional experience in journalism. Freelance journalists, as well as reporters and editors currently working at a news organization, may apply.
  • Applications will generally be accepted twice a year  — in the summer and late fall. However, we will consider time-sensitive projects on a case-by-case basis outside of the deadline periods.

For Enquiries

If you have a project that you think might qualify, please contact us at

[email protected]
How to Apply

  • Applicants should submit a well-focused story proposal of no more than three pages through the accompanying online form.
  • Think of it as pitch, much like you would submit to an editor at a newspaper, magazine, digital outlet, or radio station: give us enough preliminary reporting and documentation to demonstrate that the story is solid.
  • The proposal should highlight what’s new and significant about the story, why it matters and what its potential impact might be. The proposal should also note where significant stories on the subject have run elsewhere and how the proposed piece would differ.
  • Applicants should also briefly outline a proposed reporting plan and a timeline for completing the story, and let us know if a media outlet is lined up to run the story.
  • In addition, applicants should enclose three journalism samples. The samples should be professionally published work that showcases your ability to tackle an in-depth story in the proposed medium. Please also provide us with a resume and references from two editors or others familiar with your work; if that is a problem, please contact us to discuss alternatives.
  • No budget is required at the time of application, but finalists will be asked to provide an estimated budget at that time.

Young African Scholars Program (Grants):The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation

Young African Scholars Program (Grants):The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation

Deadline : 15 December 2017
Every two years  The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation hosts the Young African Scholars program. Ten scholars whose proposed projects are judged to be of high quality and closely relevant to the foundation’s interest in violence and aggression are selected to take part.

Violence is widely recognized as a problem in modern society. Americans identify violent crime as a predominant concern, and violent behavior is increasing among our young people. Here and abroad hostility and competition among ethnic groups have taken on a new prominence, and reports of wars from Russia to Rwanda describe a new world order as volatile as ever before, buffeted by animosities that are part of history as well as by violent responses to contemporary inequities. In too many cases, the tools of conflict resolution, therapy, and diplomacy are not working, but the urgency of each situation seems to demand immediate responses, even responses which experience and good judgment tell us will not be effective. Tough crime bills are passed, more prisons are built, high school classes are devoted to role-playing conflict situations, orphanages are proposed. The United Nations sends peacekeepers into impossible situations where its legitimacy is challenged by all sides. The results of these interventions are unpredictable, and at those rare times when peace breaks
Harry Guggenheim established this foundation to support research on violence, aggression, and dominance because he was convinced that solid, thoughtful, scholarly and scientific research, experimentation, and analysis would in the end accomplish more than the usual solutions impelled by urgency rather than understanding. We do not yet hold the solution to violence, but better analyses, more acute predictions, constructive criticisms, and new, effective ideas will come in time from investigations such as those supported by our grants.

The foundation places a priority on the study of urgent problems of violence and aggression in the modern world and also encourages related research projects in neuroscience, genetics, animal behavior, the social sciences, history, criminology, and the humanities which illuminate modern human problems. Grants have been made to study aspects of violence related to youth, family relationships, media effects, crime, biological factors, intergroup conflict related to religion, ethnicity, and nationalism, and political violence deployed in war and sub-state terrorism, as well as processes of peace and the control of aggression

Benefits

The program includes:

  • a methods workshop, fieldwork research grants of $2,000 USD each,

2017 ILO Journalism global media competition on labour migration

2017 ILO Journalism global media competition on labour migration

Deadline: 27 October 2017 23:59, Central European Time

The International Labour Organization (ILO) is launching a global media competition to recognize exemplary media coverage on labour migration.

The objective is to encourage quality reporting on labour migration. Such reporting is all the more significant as media often promotes a toxic public narrative based on nationality, national origin, gender and migratory status misperceptions, reinforcing prejudice, intolerance and stigmatization against migrant workers and their families.

While not overlooking the negative aspects (e.g. often a hard reality of exploitation and violation of human and labour rights), applicants are also encouraged to highlight the positive contribution of migrant workers to countries of origin, transit, and destination as well as the key aspects such as their fair recruitment.

The 2017 Global Media Competition on Labour Migration will be contributing to the UN TOGETHER campaign (https://together.un.org/ ) which has the purpose of encouraging global action in promoting non-discrimination and addressing the problem of rising xenophobia against refugees and migrants.

All 193 Member States of the United Nations have committed to implementing the TOGETHER Campaign which will run until the end of 2018, when the UNGA is expected to adopt the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration and the Global Compact for Refugees.

The 2017 global media competition on labour migration is organized by the International Labour Organization in collaboration with the International Trade Union Confederation, the International Organization of Employers, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the International Federation of Journalists, Equal Times, Solidarity Center, Human Rights Watch, and Migrant Forum in Asia, as well as the International Training Centre of the ILO.

This year’s competition is organized with the support of the EU funded project “Global Action to Improve the Recruitment Framework of Labour Migration (REFRAME ) and the SDC funded project “Integrated Programme on Fair Recruitment” ( FAIR )”

The competition starts on 31 July 2017 and closes on 27 October 2017.

Eligibility:

Professional journalists are invited to submit a maximum of two entries, one per each of the two following categories:

  • Written articles (online or print articles)

  • Media Production (photo journalism, audio, video)
  • Articles should not exceed 8000 words and videos/multimedia should not be longer than 10 minutes.

  • Submissions must have been published between 1 January 2016 and 27 October 2017 to qualify.
  • Entries submitted should address either one of the following 2 thematic areas:
  • (i) Labour migration aspects (migrant workers’ contribution to the social and economic development of countries of origin and destination, the protection of their labour rights, the recognition of their skills, their labour market integration, their social protection, migrant workers in an irregular situation, their working conditions (particularly their wages, working time and occupational safety and health, migrant workers in the informal economy, their trade union rights, forced labour, child labour, and trafficking situations); or
  • (ii) Fair recruitment of migrant workers (guided by the General Principles and Operational Guidelines on Fair Recruitment)
  • Refugees and displaced persons, where they are employed as workers outside their own countries, are considered migrant workers. As such, submissions covering international migrant workers and refugees (participating in labour markets outside their own countries) will be accepted.

Prizes

A total of four winners (one per category, per thematic area) will receive $1,000 USD each. Winning entries will be featured on ILO website and widely promoted as an example of good journalism.

Requirements

To enter the competition, please fill in the online entry form before 27 October 2017.

Entries are accepted in three languages: English, French, and Spanish. Entries in other languages will be accepted provided that the applicant presents a faithful translation in one of the three languages mentioned above.
Judgement Criteria

A panel of 5 distinguished judges will evaluate the top ten entries from each of the above-mentioned two categories. The decision of the ILO and judges on all matters relating to the contest is final, and no correspondence will be entered into at any stage.

The ILO encourages entries that cover different aspects of labour migration and, as much as possible, reflect views of various concerned parties: government, employers, and trade unions’ organisations, migrant workers.

In addition to ensuring that competition submissions are aligned with the basic ethics of journalism, all submissions will be judged on the following criteria:

Creativity:

Contributes to a better understanding of labour migration issues, and of migrants and refugees’ situation in the labour market, as well as fair recruitment of migrant workers’ issues;

Portrays a balanced opinion in reflecting the views of various stakeholders (migrant workers, governments, employers and trade unions);

Presents creative solutions to overcome labour protection and labour market integration challenges (e.g. if possible comparing the situation before and after the introduction of new legislation, a new migration policy, a bilateral labour agreement, etc.);

Helps combat stereotypes, xenophobia or discrimination in the labour market;

In particular, with respect to the first thematic area:

Portrays migrants’ contribution to the social and economic development of countries of origin and destination (e.g. filling labour and skills needs at all skill levels, contributing to the sustainability of social security systems, expanding the exchange of knowledge, technology, skills and commercial ties, and contributing to job creation as consumers of goods and services and tax payers, but also as micro-enterprise entrepreneurs);

Sheds light on success stories and positive practices, presenting, as much as possible the positive results of fair labour migration governance (e.g. fostering ILO standards-based anti-discrimination and equality of treatment/opportunities principles, as well as labour market integration, recognition of skills, and labour protection of all migrant workers and their family members);

Shows labour migration challenges in terms of decent work deficits such as the lack of social protection, the situation of migrant workers in an irregular situation, their working conditions (particularly their wages, working time and occupational safety and health), migrant workers in the informal economy, lack of trade union rights, and migrants in forced labour, child labour, and trafficking situations, as well as migrant workers affected by discrimination, racism and xenophobia;

In particular, with respect to the second thematic area applicants are encouraged to:

Refer to international labour standards related to fair recruitment in line with the ILO Fair Recruitment Initiative;

Reflect on the impact of fair recruitment on migrant workers’ working and living conditions.

Accuracy:

Gathers material using first hand sources;

Includes an English, French or Spanish translation which must be faithful to the original meaning if parts, or all, of the submitted entry are in another language;

Protection:

Protects vulnerable groups, sources and other sensitive components of the story by not providing unnecessary information that could risk harming them (including visual identities, names, locations etc.).
Note

  • Winners will be officially announced on 18 December to mark International Migrants Day.

  • Uses a rights-based terminology;

Participants who use the terms “illegal migrant” in their work will be disqualified since this term is considered to “stigmatize” migrants and their families .

Participants are requested to utilize the following terms: “non-documented”, “irregular migrant workers”, “irregular status”, or “migrants in an irregular situation”.

Please refer to the ILO media glossary to know more about rights-based terminologies and language that the UN supports.
