We are looking for new innovative ideas that transform teaching or school leadership to better prepare children with the 21st century skills they need to succeed in the future. Modern 21st century skills, such as problem solving, leadership, creativity, and adaptability, require a new active, student-centred system for learning. We seek ideas that better prepare teachers and school leaders to drive this new active 21st century system for learning.

We are looking for new ideas that may just be in an ideation stage or may have been tested in a small scale already, but require up to US$100,000 to demonstrate their theory of change and potential for impact. Proposals that are selected to receive an initial funding of US$100,000 and go on to demonstrate success will receive further funding to scale up and impact lives across the world.

The Misk Foundation and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation aim to empower the youth and prepare them for success in the future knowledge economy. Great opportunities exist as technologies and industries advance faster than ever before. But disruptive technologies, such as artificial intelligence, also present challenges. Industries will undergo major transformations and according to the McKinsey Global Institute, approximately half of all jobs today may be lost to automation across the developing and developed world. Moreover, major societal issues that face humanity, such as inequality and climate change, continue to spread in a complex manner.

To prepare the youth to adapt and thrive in this uncertain future, and eventually solve these major societal issues, we need to help them develop new 21st century skills and competencies. Knowledge will still be important. But critical thinking skills, such as creativity and complex decision making, will be even more important. Leadership and social skills, including working cohesively with others and collaborating across borders, will be critical. As will the ability to quickly understand complex information, learn to use it, and adapt. All of these skills paired with character traits and competencies such as grit and courage will determine success in the future.

This time we must ensure every single child, regardless of where they live, receives a quality 21st century education. In 2015 at the UN Summit, the global community agreed to strive for a quality education for every child by 2030. As such, the fourth of seventeen Sustainable Development Goals to transform the world is focused on quality education for all. But we must ensure that quality includes more than just 20th century learning objectives such as reading and writing, and also includes all the 21st century skills and competencies that are necessary for success in the knowledge economy.
Ideas may cover one or more of the following areas that impact teaching and/or school leadership:

  • Reinventing the recruitment process- how can schools attract the best people for the role? How are the people with the highest potential identified and selected?
  • Transforming training and professional development — how are new recruits prepared with essential basic skills? How is their craft further refined and enhanced over time? How is technology used to support growth? What other resources or tools be used to enhance development? How can mentoring and collaboration be leveraged more?
  • Improving resources that support high-quality learning — how can technology improve performance? How can teaching aids be transformed in line with learning 21st century skills? What other new resources can teachers leverage to improve lesson delivery?
  • New forms of management —how can new management systems and practices maximise performance? How can monitoring and incentives be effectively implemented?
  • Any other area that drastically improves the performance of teachers and school leaders in line with the new competency-based curriculum of the future


All proposals must:

  • Be aligned with the challenge outlined above and greatly improve teaching and/or school leadership
  • Improve the quality of learning with regards to 21st century skills for children around the world
  • Outline the design of the solution to clearly explain how it will work
  • Have a plan for using the US$100,000 in 12-18 months to advance the solution.
  • Have an implementation plan to ensure the solution is successfully delivered, including a plan for a strong leadership team and implementing organisation
  • Have a logical path to scale to help millions of children in an efficient manner. This includes measures for maintaining a lean approach and replicating whilst maintaining quality

    In addition, proposals will be prioritised if they:

    • Are novel and deploy a unique approach or innovative method to solving the problem
    • Have a path toward sustainability either through private or government funding
    • Show a deep understanding of the education system in which they operate and outline ideas for integration, that leverages the rest of the system, for greater impact.

      This is an opportunity provided by the Rural Poverty and Agriculture programme.
      In order to ensure the daily issues faced by rural poor people and their communities are acknowledged, it is important that their stories are heard and their voices are amplified. With funding from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the specialised UN agency, we will bring together journalists from around the world in Rome to attend IFAD’s event on innovative approaches to inclusive financing for rural transformation.

      The 2030 Global Agenda requires the development of innovative approaches incentivizing sustainable and inclusive investments. Such approaches are about aligning private and public investors around shared sustainable development objectives and mobilizing diverse sources of development finance (including climate finance and private finance), channeling it towards rural investors, including smallholder farmers and rural small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

      Being at the conference will allow journalists access to high profile delegates, leading experts in the issues, including IFAD and UN technical experts, as well as a number of small holder farmers who will be invited.

      IFAD works with those most affected by poverty, food security, gender inequality, environment and climate change.

      This should not be seen as a one-off workshop; indeed, we would expect all journalists who are selected to attend to pursue stories along these issues in their home countries after the workshop.

      Thomson Reuters Foundation, through IFAD funding and support, offers full bursaries for journalists from developing world countries working for established media organisations. 

      Eligibility:

      • Applicants must be full-time journalists or regular contributors to a media organisation. 
      • Applicants must be able to demonstrate a commitment to a career in journalism in their country, and should have at least two years’ professional experience and have a good level in spoken and written English.
      • Journalists who cover finance are particularly encouraged to apply.
      • We would also like to see professional evidence of your interest in the field of rural peoples’ issues and development.

      The program is hosted by the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).
      The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) West Africa – Accra, Ghana is accepting applications into the Yali program and this is open to candidates from the following countries:

      3.       Selection Process and Criteria

      Selection for participation in the YALI Regional Leadership Center West Africa will be conducted as a merit-based, open competition. All eligible applications will be reviewed by a selection panel. Chosen semi-finalists will then be interviewed before a final selection is made and an invitation to join the program is issued.
      Selection panels will use the following criteria to evaluate applications:

      • A demonstrated leadership in public service, business and entrepreneurship, or civic engagement.
      • Active engagement in public or community service, volunteerism, or mentorship.
      • The ability to work cooperatively in diverse groups and respect the opinions of others.
      • Strong social and communication skills.
      • An energetic, positive attitude.
      • A demonstrated knowledge, interest, and professional experience in the sector/track selected, and
      • A commitment to apply leadership skills and training to benefit your country and/or community after the program.

      The McGraw Fellowship provides editorial and financial support to journalists who need the time and resources to produce a significant story or series that provides fresh insight into an important business or economic topic. We accept applications for in-depth text, video or audio pieces, and we encourage proposals that take advantage of more than one storytelling form to create a multimedia package.

      Typically, we’ll award grants up to $5,000 a month for one to three months; in exceptional cases, we’ll consider longer grants based upon specific proposals. We’ll look for applicants with a proven ability to report and execute a complex project in their proposed medium; ideally, candidates will also have a strong background or reporting expertise on the subject of their piece.

      The McGraw Center provides editorial supervision during the Fellowship. We work with the Fellows to develop their projects during the reporting phase and frequently edit the completed stories. We also assist with placing the articles. In some cases, we partner with established print, radio or digital outlets; in others we will publish them as e-books or through the CUNY J-School’s book imprint. The stories also run on the McGraw Center website.

      City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism, began offering Fellowships to accomplished business journalists in the summer of 2014. Nearly two dozen veteran journalists have since been awarded grants of up to $15,000.
      Benefits:

      The stipend — $5,000 a month for up to three months — is intended to cover travel and research expenses incurred in reporting the stories and to assist with the Fellows’ living expenses. Where travel or other expenses are exceptionally high, we will consider covering additional expenses approved in advance. If you are receiving support from another grant or foundation for the story you are proposing, please include that in your application.
      Eligibility:

      • The McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism is open to anyone with at least five years professional experience in journalism. 
      • Freelance journalists, as well as reporters and editors currently working at a news organization, may apply.
      • Applications will generally be accepted twice a year  — in the summer and late fall. However, we will consider time-sensitive projects on a case-by-case basis outside of the deadline periods. 
      • International Journalists can apply 
      • Applicants from outside the home country will often need to meet specific English language/other language requirements in order to be able to study there.


      How to Apply:

      • Applicants should submit a well-focused story proposal of no more than three pages through the accompanying online form. Think of it as pitch, much like you would submit to an editor at a newspaper, magazine, digital outlet, or radio station: give us enough preliminary reporting and documentation to demonstrate that the story is solid. 
      • The proposal should highlight what’s new and significant about the story, why it matters and what its potential impact might be. The proposal should also note where significant stories on the subject have run elsewhere and how the proposed piece would differ. 
      • Applicants should also briefly outline a proposed reporting plan and a timeline for completing the story, and let us know if a media outlet is lined up to run the story.
      • In addition, applicants should enclose three journalism samples. The samples should be professionally published work that showcases your ability to tackle an in-depth story in the proposed medium. 
      • Please also provide us with a resume and references from two editors or others familiar with your work; if that is a problem, please contact us to discuss alternatives.
      • No budget is required at the time of application, but finalists will be asked to provide an estimated budget at that time.

      Are you about to take your finals? Or do you already have your Master’s degree in the bag? If so, then you can apply to ESA as a ‘Young Graduate Trainee’ (YGT). This high-calibre programme lasts for one year and gives successful applicants an opportunity to gain valuable experience in the development and operation of space missions. As a Graduate Trainee, you’ll take on a responsible role in supporting a project, and benefit from the expertise of an ESA tutor.

      Traineeship Opportunities for Young Graduate Trainees go online once a year in mid-November, and stay open for one month. At this time, we publish about 100 YGT job offers, aimed mainly at engineers and physicists, graduates in Information Technology, Natural or Social Science and Business.
      YGTs gain valuable experience that can qualify them for the many exciting opportunities within Europe’s space industry, renowned research institutes and, of course, ESA. This, in addition to the rich personal experience of living and working in another country and in a diverse and international environment, makes the YGT programme very popular.
      Candidates are selected by the relevant tutor, and recruitment interviews typically take place in March. The recruitment date is then made by mutual agreement and can be any time from May to September of that same year.
      Towards the end of the training period, trainees are asked to submit a report on their activities and the accomplishments achieved during the year.
      Benefits:

      Contracts are for one year. ESA will provide:

      • as of January 2017, the remuneration (or ‘take-home pay’) for a single expatriate YGT will range from €2,300 per month depending on the location of the ESA Establishment
      • an expatriation allowance, plus an installation allowance on arrival, for those not resident in the country to which they are assigned
      • travel expenses at the beginning and end of the contract (including travel expenses for spouse and children if they reside with the trainee during the contract)

      Established in Ghana in 2008, MEST offers aspiring African entrepreneurs a fully sponsored a twelve month, intensive full-time program.

      Nominations are now open for the 2018 Commonwealth Youth Awards for Excellence in Development Work. This special edition of the awards will coincide with the Commonwealth Youth Forum (CYF) preceding the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in London in April 2018 under the theme “Towards a Common Future”. It will highlight the contribution that young people are making throughout the Commonwealth, in areas such as poverty alleviation, conflict resolution and prevention, democracy and environmental preservation.

      Young people aged 15 to 29 from Commonwealth member countries are eligible to apply for the awards, which focus this year on raising the profile and celebrating young people’s contribution towards developing a fairer, more sustainable, more secure, and more prosperous future for the Commonwealth; the four sub-themes of CHOGM 2018.

      Past awardees have included young social entrepreneurs, human rights defenders, and climate change activists.

      A total of 16 finalists will be shortlisted from four Commonwealth regional categories: Africa and Europe; Asia, the Caribbean and Americas; and Pacific. A winner will be selected from each region, and one exceptional entrant will be recognised as the Commonwealth Young Person of the Year at a formal awards presentation in London alongside the CYF next April.

      Speaking at the COP23 Commonwealth Intergenerational Dialogue on 13 November 2017, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Patricia Scotland said “Young people have a critical role to play in delivering Our Common Future. In the Commonwealth and across the world, we have seen incredible examples of young people who are being the change they want to see. Their engagement and empowerment is essential to ensuring a prosperous future for all.”

      She added: “It is important that we share good practice and celebrate the already considerable impact that young people have had in all fields of work and as trendsetters in their communities. The youth awards demonstrate to leaders and other policymakers the importance of young people’s role in sustaining positive change.”

      Last year’s Commonwealth Young Person of the Year was Krystle Reid, an advocate for empowerment of young persons living with disabilities in her native country Sri Lanka. Reflecting on receiving the award she said, “It is a highlight of my life but a great opportunity and platform to further scale up the work of the Enable Lanka Foundation for an incubator space for young entrepreneurs with disabilities. This award will allow me to reach out to even more marginalised groups and communities. It is an opportunity no young person should miss.”

      Awards and shortlisting will be decided on the basis of the impact of the individual’s work, the level of innovation and problem-solving, and the quality of achievements, the sustainability of the work, and supporting evidence provided.

        In 2018, the International Center for Journalists will continue to expand its network of digital journalists, technologists and media entrepreneurs from Latin America as part of the “Digital Path to Entrepreneurship and Innovation for Latin America” program. ICFJ will also send 12 more U.S. hosts to Latin America for two-week study tours as part of the exchange. 

        While working closely with the Public Affairs Section of each country’s U.S. Embassy and partner organizations, ICFJ will recruit two rounds of professional and citizen journalists, digital media entrepreneurs and technologists to develop digital media businesses and projects from eligible countries in Latin America. 

        Applications for the six-week fall 2018 program will open again in late winter/early spring of 2018.

        Before embedding with a host organization, the program begins with an orientation in Washington, D.C., at ICFJ’s headquarters where fellows will visit digital media organizations, receive hands-on training on digital tools and techniques, and will workshop their digital media project proposals with media entrepreneurs. During the final week of the program in the United States, fellows will participate in the Professional Fellows Congress in Washington, D.C. The Congress will connect the participants with other Professional Fellows from around the globe while helping them continue to hone their leadership and entrepreneurial skill sets.

        By spending four weeks with a media host organization, fellows will learn about the latest that the digital realm has to offer in the United States as they work to develop their projects. Fellows in the past have been placed with the digital teams of traditional media, digital media startups, and organizations. Hosts in the past have included the Los Angeles Times, Mother Jones, AJ+, Fusion, Splash Media and the Huffington Post. The goal: for fellows to create media business models that harness the power of digital tools to generate sustainable revenue so the fellows can launch digital media projects in their own countries.

        This program will also spotlight the United States’ diversity and culture by immersing the fellows in their host communities while they participate in home-stay experiences. Their U.S. counterparts at selected host organizations will have the opportunity to visit the Latin Fellows’ countries for two-week programs.

        Selection will be based on professional qualifications, relevant experience, leadership potential and commitment to enhancing mutual understanding between the people of their countries. Selected participants must be fluent in English. The program is open to young professionals and emerging leaders, ages 25-40. Please note that only applicants from the 12 eligible countries will be considered: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and Peru. Participants with disabilities will be accommodated during the program and are encouraged to apply.

        Benefit:

        Selected fellows will participate in a six-week U.S. program anchored by four full weeks of professional attachments at the host institutions. Participants will be matched with U.S. hosts across the country at digital communications firms, startup incubators and cutting-edge digital newsrooms based on their backgrounds and skills.

        For this revamped version of the program, ICFJ will bring 36 more Professional Fellows from 12 countries: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and Peru.

As the company is suffering severe losses, a new management team (you and your team!) has been appointed to make the company profitable again by making strategic and tactical decisions.
