China Dialogue Trust (CDT) is seeking an Africa Editor to join its expanding Africa team. The Editor will play a key role in commissioning and editing articles on the most pressing environment and climate issues in Africa, particularly in regards to China’s role on the continent, and help formulate editorial strategy. The Editor will work closely with CDT’s existing regional editors in West and East Africa, the Global China Editor, a network of freelancers across the continent, and with colleagues in London and across our regional hubs.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in reporting and editing, as well as a keen interest in environmental and development issues, China, African and international affairs. They will be proactive, highly organised and self-motivated. We expect the candidate to be well-connected, with relevant professional experience – in journalism, research or policy – and have excellent writing, editing and verbal communications skills, an aptitude for digital technology and a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Location: Africa (with a preference for political, economic and media hubs such as Kenya, Nigeria, etc.)
Hours: 4 days (32 hours) per week
Contract type: Fixed term (12 months)
Salary: $2500 per month
Start time: ASAP
Main responsibilities:
This is an exciting opportunity to form a key part of China Dialogue’s work and join its growing global editorial team.
Editorial:
Writing, researching, commissioning and editing East African content for the China Dialogue site;
Liaising with China Dialogue editorial teams;
Coordinating translation of content and editing translated content;
Working with the Production Manager to prepare content for online publication and coordinating over selection of images to accompany content.
Communications and Marketing:
Developing syndication and content-sharing relationships with regional and vernacular media;
Promoting content via social media and other publishing platforms.
Network-building:
Liaising with contacts and partners to build a network of contributors and a dedicated readership.
