The program is designed primarily for young journalists, media managers and communications staff who come from developing and transition countries, and particularly from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. However, Germans, EU citizens, Canadians, Americans and Australians can also apply.
DW Akademie grants scholarships to up to 10 applicants each year. Prospective students from developing countries can apply for the scholarship. DW Akademie works together with Bonn University and the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences .
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree and, after graduating, at least one year of professional experience in a media-related field. Applicants must also have a good command of English.
The program is particularly aimed at:
- Media workers from radio, TV, online and print.
- Young journalists, especially those working with electronic media.
- Journalists and managers from community radio stations.
- Communications experts.
- NGO employees.
- Government ministry employees.
- Staff working in the area of development cooperation.
- Representatives of national broadcasters’ regional working groups.
- Media association representatives.
Worth of Award:
Full Scholarship:
- The scholarship is 750 EUR per month covering costs for living and accommodation.
- The tuition fee and the flight will be also reimbursed.
Eligibilities:
- For the Master’s Program, applicants must have a bachelor’s degree, at least one year of professional experience in a media-related field and advanced skills in English.
- For the International Media Studies program, applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent and at least one year of professional experience in a media-related field acquired after the completion of their first degree.
- In general, there is no age limit for applying for a scholarship. However, to be eligible for one of the DAAD scholarships, you should have obtained your last university degree no longer than 6 years ago.
- The Master’s Program is held in English and students will have to provide proof of good verbal and written language skills in English. This is usually given in form of a language test completed in their country of origin from a recognized institution. This does not apply for applicants’ native languages.
How to apply:
Before you begin filling out the online application form make sure you have all the required documents:
- Letter of motivation (signed and dated).
- Current Curriculum Vitae (Europass format, signed and dated).
- Certificate of your first academic degree (including ALL transcripts).
- Evidence of at least one year’s professional experience in a media-related field AFTER obtaining your first academic degree (for a full scholarship you must give evidence for at least one additional year of professional experience).
- Certificate of APS (for applicants who completed their first degree in China, Vietnam or Mongolia).
- Evidence of sufficient English language skills (C1-Level or higher in accordance with the “Common European Framework”) –English language certificates are valid for two years from the date of issue.
- Copy of your passport.

- Recent recommendation letter from a University (with letterhead, official University stamp, signature and date).
- Recent recommendation letter from your employer (with letterhead, official company stamp, signature and date).
- DAAD application form.
- High school diploma.
