High Seas Youth Ambassador Program 2021 for Young People Advocating for High Seas Protection

Deadline: January 15, 2021

Are you a young person who wants to help save the high seas or become involved in international treaty negotiations? Apply to be a High Seas Youth Ambassador! The High Seas Youth Ambassador Program will provide a platform for young people from around the world to raise their voices in support of a strong treaty to protect the high seas for future generations.

The high seas make up two thirds of the ocean and cover nearly half of the planet—and they belong to everyone! Successful applicants will directly collaborate with the High Seas Alliance to ensure that young peoples’ voices are heard by treaty negotiators and will enjoy mentorship opportunities with seasoned ocean and environmental activists.

Following over a decade of negotiations at the United Nations, world leaders are on the cusp of finalizing a new treaty to protect and sustainably use high seas marine biodiversity. To date, Youth voices within the treaty negotiations have been conspicuously absent. This is your ocean and the decisions made will impact your future and we think your voices should be heard!

With the final negotiation session planned for August 2021 at UN Headquarters in NYC, we need all hands on deck to ensure that the treaty creates all of the tools we need to conserve biodiversity, close management gaps, establishes accountability and transparency for activities occurring in the high seas and to ensure countries are ambitious enough for this task.

We need to safeguard our global commons for generations to come.

Eligibilities:

  • Young people from around the world who have a passion for protecting the ocean are encouraged to apply!
  • They are envisioning that applicants would be between 16-25 years old in 2021, but this is not a firm requirement. If you’re outside of that age range but very interested, please do still apply!
  • This is a year-long program; successful applicants should be willing to commit 5-8 hours per month to this program, including (virtual) monthly meetings with the HSA and/or mentor partners.
