Under the overall supervision of the UNODC Regional Representative for West and Central Africa and the substantive guidance of UNODC ECOWAS Project Regional Experts, the successful candidates will work in Abuja, Nigeria, and will liaise closely with project team members located in Nigeria and Senegal as well as national and sub-regional counterparts to ensure the effectiveness of the project.

Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Contributing to scientific data collection and publication of on the situation of drug use and forensic capacity in West Africa;
• Coordination with the substantive experts on the creation, collection and formatting of training and conference presentation materials;
• Participating in the implementation of activities of the different outcomes of the project;
• Drafting, in cooperation with the communication officer in ROSEN, official communications, press releases, speeches and articles for project team members;
• Maintaining and updating project team tools;
• Facilitating the production and dissemination of public information material through website, brochures, posters, letters, e-mails, and broadcasts in various languages as required reaching a wide public audience;
• Supporting the implementation of research on substance use in West Africa using information from peer reviewed journals, and other sources of information;
• Assisting in the preparation of reports of project activities for dissemination publication in technical journals;
• Drafting, editing, designing and facilitating documents based on available internally generated and open source materials; and
• Performing other duties as assigned.
Competencies
The United Nations Core Competencies include:

• Communication: proven ability to write in a clear and concise manner and to communicate effectively, including ability to prepare reports and conduct presentations by clearly formulating positions on issues, articulating options concisely, and conveying maximum necessary information, making and defending recommendations.
• Teamwork: proven interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or

(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and,

if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;

• Be computer literate in standard software applications;
• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
• Education or experience in epidemiology, biostatistics, forensics, drug demand reduction or related may be an advantage

Work Experience

  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English and French is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
