BBC Journalism Trainee Scheme, UK (Funded)

BBC Journalism Trainee Scheme, UK (Funded)

Deadline: APRIL 04, 2018

If you want to get first class training as a broadcast journalist with the biggest broadcasting organisation in the world, then the BBC Journalism Trainee Scheme could be for you.

The scheme which celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2018, wants to hear from people from all walks of life with a real passion and determination to train as a BBC journalist.

Main Responsibilities

What’s on offer?

  • An 11-month contract paying £20,800 per annum. If you are based in London, the salary is £25,360 per annum.
  • We also cover travel and accommodation expenses during training periods.
  • First-rate training led by the BBC Academy throughout the scheme by specialists and senior BBC journalists.
  • A mentor to support and guide you during your training.
  • The chance to work on placements within BBC News and Current Affairs across radio, television, digital and online.

Specialist Placements

The Journalism Trainee Scheme offers general placements plus a number of specialist placements. If you are interested in applying for one of them you will be invited to state a preference on the application form.

Please note that applying for a specialist placement does not invalidate your application for the trainee scheme as a whole.

The Ideal Candidate

Who are we looking for?

  • Storytellers who are creative, intelligent, resilient and curious about the world around them.
  • You should be fascinated by news and current affairs.
  • You must love meeting people and want to share their stories.
  • You must have a passion for writing
  • You may be considering a career change to train as a journalist.
  • You need to show some evidence of journalistic experience.
  • This scheme isn’t for absolute beginners
  • BUT this doesn’t mean you need to have worked at the BBC previously or know someone who works at the BBC
  • You may be writing articles for a newspaper, working at a radio station, or creating great social media content – or have a Vlog
  • You don’t need a degree in Journalism or a Masters’ Degree in Journalism
  • In fact you don’t need any academic qualifications – we think potential, talent and determination are more important
  • If you are already working as a journalist consider whether this scheme is for you, we don’t want to duplicate training you have already had
  • We place a premium on diversity
  • We welcome people from all backgrounds who can bring stories reflecting all of our audiences including people who might not normally consume news
  • There is no upper age limit but you will need to be 18 by the time the scheme starts in the autumn.

Application Process

If you are shortlisted, we will invite you to an assessment and interview. This will take place in Birmingham in June or July.

The scheme will begin on the scheme in September 2018.

You will have the opportunity to let us know if you have a disability both on the application form and before your assessment.

We can help you with any reasonable adjustments necessary for your assessment and for when you start on the scheme.

Your work placements could be based at any of the BBC’s national or regional news centres across the UK.

When applying you need to be flexible about where you live, as well as your working hours. Working at the BBC is not a Monday to Friday nine-to-five job.
