A Churchill Fellowship is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to expand your professional and personal horizons and, crucially, make a difference to communities and professions across the UK.
It begins with a travel grant for you to spend up to two months overseas, researching innovative practice on a topic of your choice. This is not an academic study, it’s a practical exploration of how things work in other countries, yielding global insights that can be brought back to the UK to influence change here.
On your return, we can support you with advice and further funding to spread your findings locally or nationally, perhaps to set up a pilot project or new organisation, and to meet key players in your topic area. They partner with key organisations in each of their project categories, to enhance the reach and impact of the Fellows’ work.
A Fellowship is for life, and you will be able to join useful networks of other Churchill Fellows in your topic or locality. Online you will have your own page on our website which can be used to promote your findings and activities. And we will keep you updated on events and Fellows’ research.
Applicants come from all backgrounds, ages and levels of experience. No qualifications are required. You will need some knowledge of your topic area but you do not need to be a field leader. They are looking for dynamic individuals who are passionate about their project and can show how they will use it to make a difference in the UK.
Eligibility:
Everyone can apply for a Churchill Fellowship.
- It is open to all UK resident citizens aged over 18, regardless of experience, background or qualifications. You do not need to be a field leader in your area of interest, but you do need to have a passion for your topic and for making change happen.
- You must be: A UK Citizen and have a British passport when you apply.
- Resident in the UK. Aged 18 or over when you submit your application form (or turn 18 by the end of that year).
They only accept one application per individual each year. If your application is unsuccessful, you can apply again. Churchill Fellows cannot reapply.
Other circumstances
- If you were born in Northern Ireland, hold an Irish passport and are resident in the UK, you can apply.
- If you are resident in the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man you can apply.
- If you reside in British Overseas Territories or serve abroad in the Armed Forces or as a diplomat you can also apply.
- If you are an Australian or a New Zealander, you might be able to apply to the Australian Trust or the New Zealand Trust
How to Apply:
They aim to make this as simple and open as possible:
1. Application : the first stage is to complete our online application form. This is your chance to tell us about your project and yourself. Forms are available once applications open, and you can register below for an email alert.
2. Shortlist : some candidates will be shortlisted and asked to complete a shortlist form. This requests more detail about the project, an outline budget and two references.
3. Interview : all shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by a panel including experts in that field. This lasts around 20 minutes and focuses on their project and plans.
4. Results : successful candidates will be informed in February and invited to a New Fellows’ Seminar where they can meet the WCMT team and receive invaluable advice on how to set up their trip, network with other Fellows and plan their whole project.
If you are unsuccessful, you can apply again another year. Many Churchill Fellows were unsuccessful with their first application. But please bear in mind that we receive more applications than we can fund.
